Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

This Georgian period serpentine chest of drawers is constructed from warm brown mahogany with brass hardware. The piece displays a shaped serpentine front with a moulded top edge, fluted corner columns, and open fret carved ogee bracket handles along the feet. Four graduated drawers run down the front, fitted with brass swan-neck handles and escutcheons, alongside a brushing slide located above the main storage section. The timber shows rich figuring across the drawer faces and top. Measuring 89 cm high, 118 cm wide, and 59 cm deep, this item provides practical surface and storage utility suitable for a bedroom, hallway, or living space. The traditional silhouette integrates naturally into period or country house interiors, offering surface display space alongside accessible drawer storage for clothing or linens.

A serpentine chest of drawers features a wave-like front profile, convex in the centre and concave at the sides, popularised in 18th-century English furniture design during the Chippendale and Georgian eras.

Georgian serpentine chests were crafted primarily from mahogany, featuring solid wood drawer linings such as pine or oak, hand-cut dovetail joints, and cast brass swan-neck handles.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut dovetail joinery, solid wood back panels with hand-sawn markings, aged brass hardware with original mounting pins, and natural wear to the drawer runners.

A mahogany serpentine chest functions as a focal point in a hallway, dining room, or bedroom, contrasting warm wood tones against modern artwork and minimalist accessories.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply clear beeswax polish once or twice a year, ensuring the piece is kept away from direct heat sources to prevent timber movement.
