George III Period Mahogany Serpentine Chest of Drawers

18th century
Description

A Very Good Quality 18th Century, George III Period, Mahogany Serpentine Chest, Having Superbly Figured Shaped Top With Attractive Wide Crossbanded Decoration, Over Baized Brushing Slide And Four Long Drawers, With Replacement Old Brass Swan Neck Handles, Raised On Original Bold Shaped Bracket Feet With Elegant Inlaid And Crossbanded Decoration.

This very elegant and attractive georgian serpentine chest is constructed from richly figured, dense mahogany timbers and retains a superb colour and patina.

It is elegantly designed with a lot of thought being put into small details, the result of which is a fabulously attractive item of Georgian 18th century furniture. A couple of examples of the attention to detail are the lovely figuring to the mahogany timbers used for the wide crossbanding and the feet which are banded and inlaid to great effect. It is also a good bold serpentine shape.

Not unusually for an item of this period it has replacement brass swan neck handles, but interestingly the set of handles which have been put on to it are very much of the style and design it would originally have sported and due to the fact that they are also old handles they could easily pass for original to the untrained eye. The lovely bracket feet are original as well which is a nice touch.

The overall quality of the construction, in combination with the elegant, attractive form mean that this chest is absolutely perfect for a whole host of spaces around the home, or even office.

As with all items we offer for sale this Georgian Mahogany Chest Of Drawers has been inspected and attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled, specialist trained, antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish before being offered for sale to ensure that it is in excellent condition and ready for immediate placement within the home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A George III serpentine chest of drawers is an 18th-century piece of case furniture characterised by a distinctive undulating, wave-like front profile. Popular during the late Georgian period, these chests feature refined timber veneers, decorative crossbanding, and cast brass hardware.

Cabinetmakers in the George III era primarily utilised Cuban or West Indian mahogany, favoured for its dense grain and rich timber tone. Drawers were typically constructed with hand-cut dovetail joints, oak or pine linings, and fitted with cast brass handles.

Authentic 18th-century pieces display hand-sawn timber marks, irregular dovetail jointing on the drawer linings, and natural shrinkage across secondary woods. Look for original cast brass backplates and undisturbed iron fixings on the reverse of the drawer fronts.

Position the chest as a focal point in a hallway, bedroom, or living room, balancing its rich timber tone with neutral wall paint or textured plaster. Pair the top surface with modern ceramics or an understated table lamp to create balanced visual contrast.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the original patina. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and extreme fluctuations in humidity to prevent timber movement.
