This hand-knotted Heriz carpet dates from the 1920 period in the Persian Heriz style. Composed of wool and cotton, the textile displays terracotta red and blue tones, alongside navy and sky blue secondary colours on the field and borders. The visual composition incorporates a bold central star medallion, light blue corner spandrels, and multi-layered geometric borders adorned with a turtle pattern and angular palmettes. Age-related wear appears across the medium pile, which is slightly heavier in places, alongside minor professional restorations and secure fringes and selvedges. Measuring 396 cm high by 293 cm wide and 1 cm deep, the floor covering provides a substantial footprint for traditional living spaces. Positioned in an English Country House interior, the rug suits placement beneath a central seating arrangement or within a large reception room. The heavy geometric patterns and traditional palette anchor the room's design scheme while offering underfoot warmth. The durable wool construction handles daily foot traffic while maintaining the integrity of the pile and the restored areas. Regular professional cleaning preserves the rich dyed tones of the medallion and borders. This piece brings historical character and classic textile artistry to contemporary interior settings.

Heriz carpets originate from the Heris region in Northwest Iran, near Mount Sabalan. Woven predominantly by village weavers during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, these carpets are celebrated for their bold, rectilinear interpretations of classic Persian medallion designs.

Heriz rugs are constructed with hand-spun wool pile woven onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation. They utilise symmetrical (Turkish or Ghiordes) knots, resulting in a thick, durable weave suitable for high-traffic areas.

Authentic Heriz carpets are identified by their distinct geometric, angular floral designs, prominent central star-shaped medallions, and corner spandrels. They feature robust, coarse weaves and a characteristic palette of terracotta red, navy blue, light blue, and ivory derived from natural plant dyes.

A large Heriz carpet acts as an anchor in a living or dining space, grounding minimalist or contemporary furniture with rich texture and historical depth. The bold geometric patterns contrast effectively against neutral walls, timber flooring, and clean architectural lines.

Regular maintenance requires gentle vacuuming without a rotating beater bar to avoid pulling the wool fibres. Promptly blot spills with cold water and a neutral soap, rotate the carpet annually to ensure even wear, and arrange professional hand-washing periodically.
