Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Persian Bakhtiar carpet dates from 1920 and is made from wool and cotton. The rectangular floor covering displays a large concentric star medallion set against a terracotta red field, complemented by deep navy blue borders, floral spandrels, and highlights of pink and beige. Measuring 433 cm high by 306 cm wide and 1 cm deep, the piece shows light age-related wear, secure fringes and selvedges, and a clean finish resulting from professional washing. Traditional motifs include multi-tiered floral borders and intricate botanical patterns across the central field. Placed in a drawing room, study, or living space, the textile provides a warm floor covering underneath furniture groupings. The rich red and blue tones complement wooden flooring and traditional interior schemes in an English country house setting.

FAQs

Bakhtiar carpets originate from the Chahar Mahaal and Bakhtiari region in western Iran. They are historically woven by nomadic Bakhtiari tribespeople and village artisans, characterised by their robust structure and distinct floral or medallion designs.

These carpets are constructed with a durable high-grade wool pile hand-knotted onto a sturdy cotton warp and weft foundation. They typically utilise Turkish (symmetrical) knots, resulting in a thick, dense weave built for heavy foot traffic.

Authenticity is indicated by natural dye variations, slight intentional asymmetry in the hand-woven pattern, and a thick wool pile over a double-weft cotton foundation. The underside will clearly display visible hand-tied knots with subtle irregularities.

A large Bakhtiar carpet serves as a structural anchor in living or dining areas, balancing modern minimalist furniture with rich texture and historical depth. Positioning neutral contemporary seating around the central medallion allows the intricate floral pattern to remain the visual focal point.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting without a rotary brush to protect the hand-knotted wool fibres. Professional spot cleaning and periodic professional hand-washing are recommended to maintain the natural lanolin content and colour depth.
