This pair of Victorian Egyptian Revival sculptures takes the form of reclining sphinxes dating from around 1890. Each figure wears a traditional nemes headcloth and rests upon a dark rectangular plinth. The metal components show a rich gilt gold finish, contrasting with the dark background fabric seen in the display setting. They stand 19 cm high and measure 28 cm wide, presenting a substantial presence for display. Such pieces suit placement in a gentleman's library or upon a mantelpiece, bringing classical architectural character to an interior. The heavy construction anchors them securely in a chosen room setting, while the metallic sheen catches interior lighting effectively. They offer a decorative focal point for shelving or side tables, integrating easily into traditional or eclectic interior schemes.

Inspired by archaeological discoveries throughout the 19th century, Egyptian Revival design features motifs such as sphinxes, pharaohs, obelisks, and winged scarabs, gaining prominence during the Napoleonic era and experiencing a resurgence in the late Victorian period.

High-end decorative pieces from the late 19th century were typically cast in bronze, often featuring fire-gilding, patination, or electro-gilded finishes, and mounted on solid black marble, slate, or stone bases.

Authentic period pieces display crisp hand-chased surface details, age-appropriate wear to the gilding, substantial weight, and period-correct threaded rods or square nuts securing the metal sculpture to its stone plinth.

A pair of decorative sphinxes can be positioned symmetrically to frame a central clock on a mantelpiece, used as desk bookends, or arranged on a console table alongside classical literature and antique glassware.

Dust gilt bronze regularly using a soft, clean microfibre cloth or a dry natural-bristle brush, avoiding liquid polishes, abrasive chemicals, and excess moisture that can erode historic surface gilding.
