Description

Milas lies between Mugla and Kusadasi in the south-western coastal region of the Aegean.

The pre-1900 rugs made in Milas are probably amongst the most sought-after of Anatolian rugs, owing to their high quality, with medium to fine knotting and vegetable colours.

This fabulous Milas rug probably originated in the area of Karaova due to its field of vertical border patterns and dates to the early 19th century.

The outer ivory border and inner pea-green border has a remarkable abstraction of a carnation with the main red border design comprising, what appears to be, a stylised dragon feeding on a continuous vine. This depiction can also be seen in the golden-yellow and red, vertical field borders.

The natural colours are beautiful and the photos just don't do the rug full justice. This is a rare and very collectible rug.

Size: 1.52m x 1.17m (5' 0" x 3' 10").

Milas rugs originate from the south-west region of Anatolia in Turkey and are historically known for their distinctive use of soft earthy tones, prayer niches, and stylised floral or geometric motifs.

These rugs are traditionally hand-knotted using locally sourced sheeps wool for both the pile and the foundation, often dyed with natural vegetable colorants such as madder root and indigo.

Authenticity is identified through examining the weave density, natural abrash variations in the wool, traditional symmetrical Turkish knots, and the characteristic palette specific to the weaving traditions of the Milas district.

An antique rug can be layered over larger neutral flooring or placed as a focal point in a living room or study to add texture, warmth, and historical depth to contemporary spaces.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without the beater bar, professional organic washing when necessary, and keeping the textile away from direct, prolonged sunlight to protect the natural dyes.
