This original Victorian genre portrait watercolour painting, titled 'His Sunday Best' and dated 1895, depicts an elderly gentleman in an interior cleaning his hat. Rendered in watercolour and gouache on paper in the style of Victorian Realism, the work shows the subject in a light smock with a red necktie, standing beside a blue box on a table. The artwork is signed and dated by the artist, A. C. Purvis, in the lower right corner, and is set behind glass within an original, ornate gilt moulded frame featuring intricate relief decoration and a pale mount board. The overall piece measures 68.5 cm high, 55.8 cm wide, and 2.5 cm deep. Suitable for period and traditional interiors, the framed painting works well hung above a sideboard in a dining room, living room, or hallway. Its classic subject matter and decorative gilt frame bring warmth and nineteenth-century character to domestic wall spaces, pairing easily with antique wooden furniture and neutral or richly coloured wall finishes.

Victorian genre watercolour paintings are nineteenth-century artworks created using water-soluble pigments on paper that depict scenes of daily life, domestic routines, and character studies.

Late nineteenth-century watercolours were painted on heavy rag paper using natural mineral pigments bound with gum arabic, then presented under protective glazing inside moulded gesso and gilt wood frames.

Authentic Victorian watercolours exhibit age-consistent paper toning, historical framing techniques, original signatures or dates, and fine, layered brushwork standard to the period.

Position Victorian portraiture within a curated gallery wall or place a single framed piece above a sideboard to introduce an historical focal point against dark, moody paint colours.

Preserve watercolour art by hanging it away from direct sunlight, maintaining stable humidity levels, and utilising UV-protective glass paired with acid-free mounting board.
