Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1930s:
Hand-knotted wool pile with natural colour variations: village weaving of the period.
Mellowed red, green and ochre dye tones: softened by decades of exposure.
Scattered areas of lower pile across the field: honest wear from domestic use.
Stylised floral palmettes and angular vines: characteristic pattern of the Arak district.

This antique Persian Mahal rug dates from 1930 and measures 200 cm high by 133 cm wide. Crafted from wool and cotton, the textile displays a rich terracotta red field decorated with an intricate central medallion, floral palmettes, vines, and spandrel details. The design is framed by a geometric border in dark navy blue, incorporating sage green and cream elements throughout the pattern. Visible signs of age include areas of low pile across the surface. Well suited for domestic interiors, the carpet integrates easily into traditional schemes, functioning effectively as a floor covering in a living room, study, or bedroom. The hand-knotted construction provides both durability and decorative appeal, complementing classic home furnishings with its traditional styling and earthy colour palette.

FAQs

Mahal rugs originate from the Arak carpet-weaving district in central Persia, woven predominantly during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They evolved from regional village weaving traditions to meet international export demand, becoming known for their relaxed floral compositions and muted dye palettes.

Authentic Mahal carpets are hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun sheep wool for the pile, knotted onto a sturdy cotton warp and weft foundation. The wool is dyed using traditional plant-based and mineral dyes to achieve soft, layered colour tones.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-tied asymmetrical knots visible on the reverse side, slight natural colour variations known as abrash, and a soft, pliable handle. The patterns feature characteristic wide floral borders, curvilinear vines, and central medallions rather than rigid machine-made precision.

Interior designers frequently position Mahal rugs as foundational anchor pieces over exposed timber floorboards or flagstones. Their subdued terracotta, sage, and navy hues complement both period English furnishings and minimalist modern upholstery.

Vacuum regularly without using a rotating beater bar to prevent fiber pulling. Address spills immediately by blotting with a clean cloth and warm water, and arrange professional cleaning by a specialist textile restorer every few years.
