This nineteenth-century Victorian campaign chest of drawers is constructed from warm brown mahogany with a polished timber finish, featuring brass corner straps and flush recessed handles. The two-section piece stands on four turned feet and contains a combination of two short over four long mahogany-lined drawers, with the middle drawer extending to form a fitted secretaire containing compartments and a lift-up writing slope lined with dark leather and gold tooling. A maker's label marked Army & Navy C.S.L is mounted on the top right drawer. Practical dimensions measure 113 cm high, 99 cm wide, and 50 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this campaign chest serves as a practical storage unit and writing desk, suitable for placement in a study, library, bedroom, or living area. The modular two-section construction allows for straightforward relocation between rooms. The tactile combination of timber surfaces, brass hardware, and leather provides a functional workspace alongside conventional drawer storage.

A military secretaire chest, also known as a campaign chest, is a modular piece of furniture designed for military officers to pack and transport during military deployments in the 18th and 19th centuries, featuring a drop-down writing surface within a top drawer.

These pieces were typically constructed from robust hardwoods such as mahogany, teak, or camphor wood, split into two separate sections, and equipped with flush brass corners and handles to prevent damage during transit.

Authentic campaign chests feature two modular splitting sections, flush-fitting brass hardware, original carry handles on the sides, and evidence of hand-cut dovetail joints inside the drawers.

Position the chest in a home office, study, or hallway where the secretaire drawer can pull out to serve as an occasional writing desk while offering substantial storage.

Dust regularly with a soft cloth, apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year following the wood grain, and clean brass fittings gently without harsh chemical restorers.
