An Edwardian mahogany compactum wardrobe dates to 1920. This tall, freestanding piece displays a warm brown timber finish with an attractive grain, deep panelled doors, a moulded cornice, and a solid plinth base, alongside circular brass hardware and brass key escutcheons. The professional repolishing leaves the surface in excellent condition. Measuring 175 cm high, 127.5 cm wide, and 56 cm deep, the wardrobe provides generous storage in a compact footprint suitable for a bedroom or dressing room. The interior configuration includes a hanging section, graduated shelves, pull-out compartments, fitted door storage, and a mirror, secured with a working lock and key.

Originating in the nineteenth century and gaining widespread popularity during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, the compactum wardrobe was created to offer an all-in-one storage solution. Designed to combine hanging rails, slides, and internal drawers within a single casing, it provided streamlined organisation for modernising bedrooms.

These wardrobes were typically constructed using solid hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, often featuring flame mahogany veneers on front panel doors. Cabinetmakers used traditional joinery techniques, including hand-cut dovetail joints for internal drawers and solid brass hardware for latches and locks.

Authentic pieces generally show signs of traditional craftwork, such as hand-sawn drawer linings, original brass locks or stamped maker marks inside doors and drawers. Examining the rear panel for hand-planed timber and checking for natural, age-related patination on handles can also confirm authenticity.

A dark mahogany piece provides visual grounding when set against muted contemporary wall tones like sage green or off-white. Positioned as a focal piece in a dressing room or bedroom, it bridges traditional craftsmanship with modern minimalist textiles.

Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the timber and retain its lustre. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and prolonged sunlight to prevent the timber from warping or drying out.
