Edwardian fire surrounds often combined classical revival motifs with lighter proportions compared to heavy Victorian designs, frequently featuring carved wood and painted finishes to brighten rooms.

These pieces were typically constructed from softwood such as pine or hardwood like oak, utilizing traditional mortise and tenon joinery alongside hand-carved applied ornamentation.

Authentication involves inspecting the timber grain, tool marks, original paint layering, and construction techniques to ensure period-correct fabrication methods.

An antique mantel can serve as a focal point against neutral walls, paired with a minimalist hearth or styled with contemporary art and objects to create a balanced contrast.

Preservation requires gentle dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and avoiding harsh chemical solvents to protect the aged painted surface and delicate timber carvings.
