Description

This sparkling Fachrolo Kazak rug reveals the best in Caucasian rugs. The dyes and graphics are simply sensational. The abrashed green field is centred by the classic Fachrolo medallion and is surrounded by numerous boxes containing archaic geometric ornaments. There is a further outer field in a lovely abrashed terracotta with more geometric ornamentation. Note the generous use of a lovely aubergine dye throughout the rug which dates it to 1870 or earlier. A subtle feature of the composition is that the field design is ostensibly in the prayer or architectural format with a niche at the bottom and top. All this action is framed by crisply drawn 'wine glass and calyx leaf' border on an ivory background. The weave is unusually fine for a rug of this type, and the pile is clipped low. It is fair to say that this piece, although of tribal inspiration, was probably woven in a workshop servicing Russian or Persian clientele. Furthermore, it has survived in very good condition with only minor signs of wear. Minimal restoration. Professionally cleaned.

Date of Manufacture

Aaron Nejad Carpets and Rugs has dated this Antique Caucasian Rug to the 1870s.

Antique Caucasian rugs originate from the Caucasus region situated between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, encompassing modern-day countries like Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia. Weaving traditions in this mountainous area date back centuries, with pieces from the 19th century characterised by bold geometric motifs and rich, saturated natural dyes.

These rugs are traditionally hand-knotted using hand-spun sheeps wool for the pile, warp, and weft threads. Natural dyestuffs derived from plants, roots, insects, and minerals were employed to achieve distinctive shades of madder red, indigo blue, and earthy yellows, resulting in a durable structure with a dense, flat weave.

Authentic pieces exhibit irregularities in symmetry and weave due to their nomadic or village production methods. Inspection of the foundation reveals hand-spun wool fibres with natural colour variations, while the pile shows authentic wear patterns and rich patination characteristic of vegetable-dyed wool aged over generations.

An antique rug serves as a textural anchor in modern spaces, pairing effectively with minimalist furniture, polished wooden flooring, or neutral upholstery to let the intricate geometric patterns stand out. Layering the piece over a larger, neutral jute or sisal base provides added scale and grounding in living rooms or studies.

Preservation requires regular, gentle vacuuming without a rotating beater bar to protect the aged fibres and fringe. Keeping the textile away from direct sunlight prevents fading of natural dyes, and professional cleaning by specialists in antique rugs ensures the structural integrity remains intact over time.
