Antique Kazak rug with a soft red background with a pale off white border, a striking Caucasian rug which has a wonderful shield design. Woven by Armenian weavers in the mountains of the Caucasus, this rug has amazing border designs, with classical motifs of S which represent the sun, the crab border motif and shield designs too. The natural dyes have faded, yet retained their beauty and create a collectable and exciting 140 year old Caucasian rug.
Condition is very good, with a soft wool and medium pile height. Fringes are original and sides are too in lots of areas, only a few lower areas of pile, mainly in the black/brown dyes which are due to corrosion. Iron properties were in the brown/black dyes when the wool was made over 100 plus years ago, so this corrosion has happened over this time period.
Rugs bearing the name Kazak come from the highland area of the Caucasus in Azerbaijan whose centre is the town of Kazak. Woven by semi-nomadic shepherds of the region. They use fabulous vegetable dyes and high quality hand spun wool from their own herd. Depending on the weave some Kazak rugs can be extremely soft to handle as the wool is light and woven on a supple foundation.
