Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE VICTORIAN ERA:
Brazed cramp seams along the back: hand copper work of the late nineteenth century.
Cast brass brackets secured by copper rivets: sturdy Victorian fireside construction.
Rolled rim to the scoop mouth: traditional hand finishing before modern pressing.
Naturally darkened interior patination: honest domestic coal fireside use.
Turned hardwood grips on shaped brass supports: standard design of the 1880s.

This Victorian helmet coal scuttle takes a rustic farmhouse form in copper, brass and wood, finished in warm metallic tones. The piece displays brazed handmade dovetail seams, a turned wooden overhead carry handle secured with ornate brass mounts, a rear brass handle, and a raised circular pedestal base. Visible signs of age include scuffs, wear and marks commensurate with its history, along with a small chip to the turned carry handle. Measuring 40 cm high, 28 cm wide and 50 cm deep, the scuttle is designed for domestic placement by a fireplace hearth. It functions practically today for storing logs, kindling or coal beside a working hearth or decorative fire surround.

FAQs

Designed in the nineteenth century, the helmet-shaped coal scuttle featured a wide flared rim that allowed users to scoop and pour coal directly into grates without spilling ash onto the surrounding floor.

Victorian scuttles were typically crafted from sheet copper or brass, featuring hand-riveted joints, cast brass handles, turned wooden grip bars, and solid pedestal bases.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-hammered copper construction, hand-fitted rivets, natural oxidation within the interior, and heavy turned-wood or cast-metal handles.

Position the scuttle alongside a fireplace hearth to store modern kindling, pinecones, or rolled logs, or re-purpose it in an entryway as a decorative vessel.

Dust metal surfaces regularly with a dry cloth; if desired, apply a non-abrasive metal polish to maintain brightness, or leave the surface untreated to retain historical patina.
