This rare pair of Louis XVI style side cabinets originates from 1890, presented in warm brown kingwood with complementary ormolu mounts and shaped marble tops. Each cabinet stands on cabriole feet with scrolled foliate mounts, featuring floral marquetry panels on the doors and sides, scrolling gilt-bronze mounts, mythical masks on the drawer fronts, and caryatid supports flanking the front. The structure incorporates functional doors that open to internal shelving, accompanied by fine surface mouldings and classical decorative highlights. The dimensions measure 109.2 cm high, 121.9 cm wide, and 45.7 cm deep per cabinet. Positioning these side cabinets within a formal living room, hallway, or dining space offers an opulent surface for displaying decorative items while providing concealed storage. The ornate gilt detailing and rich timber grain complement traditional interior schemes, serving as striking focal points against a feature wall or flanking a grand entryway. Their substantial proportions and intricate brasswork suit period properties and classic design settings alike.

The Louis XVI style originated in 18th-century France, characterised by neo-classical symmetry, straight lines, geometric marquetry, and fine gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts, frequently incorporated into 19th-century revival cabinetmaking.

These cabinets typically feature exotic wood veneers such as kingwood, tulipwood, or rosewood, inlaid with floral marquetry, fitted with cast gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts, and topped with contoured marble slabs.

Authentic pieces exhibit exceptionally crisp chasing on the gilt-bronze mounts, precise marquetry joinery, heavy oak frame construction, and occasionally maker stamps on the woodwork or bronze castings.

Position them symmetrically flanking a doorway, hallway mirror, or central artwork to anchor the space, using the gilded mounts and wood tones to contrast against neutral wall finishes.

Dust surfaces using a soft dry cloth, avoid harsh liquid polish on gilt-bronze mounts to prevent stripping the gilded finish, and maintain consistent room humidity to avoid wood veneer movement.
