Large Slipware Dish by John Hudson - Late 20th C. (Based on 17th C. Fragment)

Later than 1960
Sold 8 December 2025 · M Cross Antiques
This “Large Slipware Dish by John Hudson - Late 20th C. (Based on 17th C. Fragment)” found a buyer.

It was listed by M Cross Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

A beautifully decorated slipware dish made from an original fragment of 17th-century origin, dug out of the soil at Longley Old Hall, Huddersfield.

On discovery, the owners of Longley Old Hall took their found stoneware fragments to John Hudson in Mirfield, who recognised the pieces as dating to around 1645 and having come from Renthorpe in Wakefield.

Mr Hudson's wonderfully re-created piece, shown here and based on the original piece, is decorated in trailed cream slip with tulips and wavy-edged leaves radiating from the centre, edged with a trailed wavy line to the border.

The overall condition is superb, having no marks, chips or losses. Verso is a white felt pad stuck to the base in order to protect polished surfaces, and peeling back one side of this reveals the maker's mark.

Other items shown within the images are available in separate listings.

Slipware is a ceramic technique where liquid clay, known as slip, is applied to a leather-hard clay body as a decorative coating or pattern before firing.

Slipware typically utilises local earthenware clays finished with a transparent lead or alkaline glaze, often featuring trailed or combed slip designs applied by hand using quills or spouted vessels.

Identification involves examining the clay body, glaze characteristics, tool marks, and stylistic adherence to historical manufacturing techniques, though maker marks or provenance often aid attribution.

Large decorative chargers can be displayed upright on a plate stand within shelving units, hung securely on walls as artisanal focal points, or placed flat on surface furniture to anchor decorative displays.

Ceramics should be kept away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature fluctuations, and moisture. Cleaning should be restricted to gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth rather than immersion in water.
