The George III period, spanning from 1760 to 1811, is characterised by a transition from heavier baroque influences to more classical, restrained proportions, incorporating elements from Chippendale, Hepplewhite, and Sheraton designs.

Cabinet makers predominantly used solid oak or mahogany for structural integrity and exterior panels, often incorporating secondary woods like pine or deal for drawer linings and internal dividers, assembled with traditional dovetail joints.

Authenticity is identified through hand-cut dovetails, timber shrinkage consistent with age, period-appropriate brass hardware or filled ghost holes from previous handles, and hand-planed surfaces rather than machine-toothed marks.

An antique wooden bureau works effectively as a focal point in a contemporary home office or living room, contrasted against neutral walls and minimalist seating to highlight its rich grain and historical craftsmanship.

Maintain antique oak by keeping it out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources to prevent wood splitting, and nourish the timber periodically with traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone polishes.
