Karabagh Rug

1900 - 1920
Description

This rug certainly makes a statement and would need to be situated in the right room. These garish colours are typical of Karabagh pieces and this one somewhat excels in that respect. The bright red contrasts markedly with the black field with the softer green providing some respite. The large birds dominate the scene and are quite comical. Note the rug has been reduced in length hence the imbalance in design. It is certainly one that you either love or hate. I really like it for its unsual palette and crude drawing.

This rug has been cut and shut as they say, that is a section has been removed and the outer sections joined again. Some wear to the field but otherwise a usable piece.

This Karabagh rug is a hand-knotted wool carpet from 1920 in a Caucasian style, measuring 251 cm high and 122 cm wide. The composition displays a dark navy field dominated by large stylized beige birds with red wing details, a prominent central red geometric star medallion, and floral motifs, all enclosed within a geometric border in red, beige, and white. The palette combines bright red, black, softer green, and pale pink tones. The construction exhibits visible wear to the field, and the piece has been reduced in length through a cut and shut section removal that joins the outer segments. In a modern interior, this carpet suits placement in a hallway, reception room, or study as a floor covering. The wool material and low pile allow it to function practically under foot traffic while providing a striking historical focal point for the floor space.

Karabagh rugs originate from the Southern Caucasus region, renowned for their bold tribal motifs, dark field backgrounds, and distinctive floral or avian depictions woven into the design.

These carpets are traditionally hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a wool or cotton warp and weft structure, dyed using natural plant extracts.

Genuine examples feature hand-knotted asymmetrical weaving, subtle natural colour variations known as abrash, soft wool pile, and geometric or pictorial motifs characteristic of the region.

Position the rug to anchor a seating layout, allowing its deep colour palette and architectural patterns to contrast against exposed wooden floorboards and minimalist or traditional furniture.

Vacuum regularly on a low setting without a rotating brush, rotate the carpet annually to ensure balanced exposure, and utilise professional cleaning services for spot removal.
