Description

A magnificent antique inlaid mahogany leather top Carlton House desk. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1890-1900 period.

It is of the utmost quality, it has a very smart design and is a great size. The mahogany has a gorgeous colour tone and beautiful grain patterns on all sides. The inset leather top has a fantastic colour and tooled edges, the central section lifts up to be a writing slope and is supported by a mahogany ratchet mechanism. There is plenty of storage space in the many drawers, which have high quality brass handles, Hobbs locks and fine, hand cut dovetailed joints. The upper section has a pierced brass gallery and lovely brass letter apertures that lead down into the small cabinets. This stands on tapered legs terminating in brass casters, it is nicely finished on all sides, so can be used as a free standing item.

We have had this recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age. There is just some very minor old wear and patina here and there beneath the polish.

The upper section lifts off for ease of transport, and is held in place by dowel pegs.

The Carlton House desk originated in the late 18th century and is traditionally attributed to the furniture maker George Hepplewhite, designed originally for the Prince of Wales at Carlton House.

These pieces are typically constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, featuring intricate string inlay, brass gallery rails, leather-lined writing surfaces, and hand-cut dovetail joints in the small drawers.

Authenticity is determined by examining timber age, hand-cut dovetailing, period-appropriate brass hardware, secondary woods used in drawer construction, and signs of genuine wear and oxidisation on the leather and wood finishes.

Pair this classic form with contemporary seating and minimalist lighting to create a striking contrast, allowing the rich wood tones and historic silhouette to serve as a sophisticated focal point in a home office.

Maintain the wood with high-quality beeswax applied sparingly, protect the leather insert with appropriate specialist leather creams, and keep the desk away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations.
