Landscapes featuring Highland cattle gained significant popularity during the Victorian era, particularly within the British School of art, reflecting a romanticised view of the Scottish highlands and pastoral life.

These works are typically executed in oil paint on a woven linen canvas, stretched over a wooden frame, and housed within an ornate plaster-moulded wood frame with a gilded finish.

Authenticity is assessed through examination of the canvas weave, the composition and ageing of the oil paint layers, craquelure patterns, stretcher frame construction, and the presence of period artist signatures or stamps.

An ornate gilt-framed painting serves as a striking focal point when hung against a moody, saturated wall colour or contrasted within a minimalist, contemporary space to add depth and historical character.

Preservation requires hanging the artwork away from direct sunlight and heat sources, maintaining stable relative humidity levels, and dusting the canvas and frame gently with a soft, dry brush.
