Pair of English 19th Century Oil Paintings on Board - 'The Rivals' - Unsigned.

19th century
Description

Here are a pair of oil paintings on board in their original heavy gilt frames entitled 'The Rivals', English mid 19th Century.

One painting depicts two hounds breaking the cover in woodland, with a rider in scarlet coat in the trees behind, the other a group of foxes, reclining in the ferns and foxgloves by their den after a hearty dinner.

The paintings measure 32cm by 27cm each (framed) and have both been professionally cleaned, and had their frames restored.

The paintings are unsigned, with the exception of their title 'The Rivals' applied to the picture of the hounds.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

British sporting art from the 19th century typically depicts rural pursuits, equestrian scenes, working hounds, and native wildlife, reflecting the agrarian traditions and field sports popular during the Victorian era.

Artists commonly painted on wooden panels, millboard, or stretched canvas using oil-based pigments, finishing the works with natural varnishes and housing them in moulded pine or composition frames decorated with gold leaf.

Authentic pieces generally show natural craquelure across the varnish and paint layers, age-related darkening or oxidisation on the reverse of the panel, and period-appropriate joinery or composition details on the gilded frame.

Pair small framed oils on a gallery wall alongside modern photography, or place them above a console table or mantelpiece to introduce texture, historical character, and depth to living spaces.

Dust the surface gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoid using chemical cleaners or water, and display the artwork away from direct sunlight, high humidity, or sudden temperature fluctuations.
