Description

It's not often a nineteenth century tobacco-bag appears on the market, but this one appeared recently, described as a vanity-bag! However, on its arrival, I realised it wasn't a vanity-bag but a stunning little tobacco-bag. I was thrilled to acquire it as I've never had one this good!

It was made by Khamseh Confederacy nomads in Fars Province, south-west Persia during the last quarter nineteenth century and is in excellent condition. The long neck folds over the face of the bag and the long braided cord is then wrapped around the bag keeping the precious tobacco secure.

Woven in weft-substitution technique with weft-faced plain-weave technique, the attached photos show the bag opened and closed.

A rare and charming bag of which few exist now.

Khamseh confederacy weaving originates from the Fars province in south-west Persia, created by a confederation of five distinct nomadic and sedentary tribes who combined diverse Persian, Qashqai, and Arab design traditions.

These items are typically constructed using handspun wool for both the warp and weft, employing slit-weave kilim techniques or soumak wrapping, often dyed using natural vegetable and insect colourants.

Authentic pieces exhibit irregularities in weave and symmetry, handspun wool with characteristic abrash colour variation, and authentic natural dye palettes rather than modern synthetic colours.

Such textiles work well when mounted in shadow box frames as wall art, placed flat on a coffee table, or displayed on specialist stands to highlight their artisanal craftsmanship.

Preservation requires keeping the item out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, avoiding excessive moisture, and occasionally vacuuming gently through a mesh screen on a low setting.
