Description

This is a great example of Shahsavan tribal weaving. Excellent natural dyes and hand spun wool have produced a lovely range of colours and patina. The design of repeating stripes in narrow and wide bands of different colours is ubiquitous. However, it is interesting how only the narrow bands are decorated with geometric ornamentation. On one level, it is a clever device to enliven the composition, and engages the viewer's attention. But could there also be some spiritual or mystical significance? One never really knows what is in the tribal weaver's mind. Yet that subtle feature makes this piece both highly decorative and collectible. Despite being made for domestic use, this piece has been cherished through the generations and has survived in excellent condition.

Date of Manufacture

Aaron Nejad Carpets and Rugs has dated this Antique Shahsavan Kilim to the 1890s.

Shahsavan kilims are flatwoven rugs crafted by nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes in the Caucasus and northwest Persia, traditionally known for their distinctive striped designs and slit-weave construction.

Authentic antique kilims are typically made from handspun sheeps wool for both the warp and weft threads, dyed using natural plant and insect extracts such as madder root and indigo.

Authentication involves examining the natural variations in organic dyes, handspun wool irregularities, slit-weave structural techniques, and age-appropriate wear along the selvedges and fringes.

An antique flatweave rug can be layered over larger neutral jute carpets or placed directly onto hardwood flooring to add textural contrast, rich heritage colour, and geometric pattern to modern spaces.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent dye fading, and utilizing professional specialist textile conservators for cleaning.
