Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1890s:
Cast brass bin pulls with label holders: typical commercial shop fittings of the period.
Original slotted screws securing the handles: cabinet fittings predating modern crossheads.
Scrubbed pine top with deep ingrained markings: decades of trade use.
Fielded panelling to the front and sides: solid joinery for a free-standing counter.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating from the late nineteenth century, this French country shop counter functions as a bank of twelve drawers with a natural scrubbed pine top surface and a dark grey painted body. The piece stands on a solid plinth base, incorporating panelled sides, decorative mouldings around each drawer front, and original metal cup handles. Two pull-out slides sit beneath the top surface, while the timbers display visible signs of age and wear across the painted and unpainted surfaces. Measuring 83 cm high, 253 cm wide, and 86.5 cm deep, the unit provides substantial storage capacity. In a modern home, such a large counter serves effectively as a kitchen island, a sideboard in a dining room, or a storage console in a generous hallway. The long timber top offers an expansive workspace for food preparation or displaying decorative objects, whilst the array of twelve drawers organises kitchenware, table linens, or household items. The rustic combination of grey paint and natural wood suits traditional farmhouse interiors and industrial spaces alike.

FAQs

An antique shop counter, or bank of drawers, was originally constructed for commercial retail environments such as haberdasheries, draperies, and apothecary shops to store goods and serve as a transaction surface.

These pieces were typically crafted from solid softwoods like pine or hardwoods like oak, often featuring hand-dovetailed drawer joints, panelled ends, and heavy-duty iron or brass cup handles.

Authentic commercial counters display signs of functional wear on the top surface, original construction techniques like hand-cut joinery, and drawer dimensions sized specifically for historic trade goods.

Large shop counters function effectively as kitchen islands, dining room sideboards, or hallway storage, pairing well with neutral tones and natural stone surfaces.

Clean timber surfaces with a damp cloth and apply clear beeswax to bare wood to preserve the finish, while avoiding harsh chemical cleaners on painted bases.
