The bombe commode originated in France during the Baroque and Rococo periods, becoming particularly prominent during the reign of Louis XV, characterised by its distinctive outward-curving sides and bulbous profile.

Authentic pieces are typically constructed from a carcase of native timber, overlaid with elaborate wood veneers and marquetry patterns, and finished with cast gilt bronze or brass mounts known as ormolu.

Authentication involves examining the hand-cut dovetail joints, the type of secondary woods used in the drawer construction, the quality of the hand-chased ormolu mounts, and the natural ageing of the veneer and marble top.

Pairing an ornate piece with minimalist walls and contemporary lighting creates a striking focal point, balancing historical complexity with clean, modern lines.

Maintain a stable room temperature away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking, and apply microcrystalline wax sparingly to nourish the polished wood surface.
