Description

A very rare and charming small, square rug, made by Ersary tribes in the middle Amu Darya region of Turkmenistan, circa 1870.

I suspect this was made as a wedding rug for the bride and groom to stand on when taking their marriage vows.

The beautiful, glowing natural brick-red ground comprises a large Ersary 'gul' or tribal crest in the centre and surrounded by a turquoise border containing a continuous vine pattern - symbolising the eternal cycle of life. Both ends have an extra panel or 'elem' containing nine, small, stylised flowers finishing with narrow bands of plain-weave.

In excellent condition with no repairs whatsoever, this is a highly collectible little rug.

79cm x 88cm wide (2' 7" x 2' 11" wide).

Turkmen wedding rugs were traditionally woven by nomadic tribes in Central Asia, specifically groups like the Ersary, as part of a brides dowry. These textiles held profound cultural significance, often incorporating tribal symbols meant to bestow protection, prosperity, and fertility upon the newlywed couple.

Authentic pieces are hand-knotted using locally sourced wool for both the pile and the foundation threads, occasionally incorporating cotton or goat hair. Natural dyes, derived from plants, roots, and insects, were traditionally employed to create deep terracotta, madder red, and indigo colour palettes.

Authentication involves examining the irregularity of the hand-knotted pile, the organic variations in natural dyes, and the specific tribal motifs such as guls or geometric octagons. The construction of the selvedges and the condition of the wool provide further indicators of genuine age and provenance.

An antique tribal rug introduces warmth, texture, and historical depth to modern spaces. It can be used as a striking floor accent in a minimalist living room or layered over a larger neutral jute rug to anchor a seating arrangement and highlight its geometric patterns.

Preservation requires regular, gentle vacuuming without a beater bar to protect the aged wool fibres, alongside professional cleaning by specialists in antique textiles. Direct, prolonged exposure to harsh sunlight should be avoided to prevent the natural dyes from fading.
