An original etching is a printmaking technique where an artist incises a design onto a metal plate coated with acid-resistant wax, which is then submerged in acid to bite the lines before being inked and pressed onto paper.

Traditional printmaking of this period typically utilised copper or zinc plates, high-grade etching inks, and heavy cotton rag or wove paper.

Authentic period etchings generally exhibit a distinct plate mark impression in the paper, fine tonal graduation rather than dot matrix pixelation, and often bear pencil signatures or publisher details.

Monochrome etchings pair well with neutral walls, traditional timber framing, and classic or transitional decor schemes, adding a layer of historical depth and texture.

Paper artworks should be framed using acid-free mounting materials and displayed away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity to prevent fading and foxing.
