This nineteenth-century French bronze sculpture depicts a reclining female nude figure created by Edmond Leveque. The work displays a dark brown patinated finish with moderate age-related wear to the patina, showing smooth contours along the draped fabric and the resting figure. Mounted upon a matt black painted hardwood base, the sculpture measures 27.5 cm wide by 13 cm deep and 16.7 cm high. Ideal for placement on a mantelpiece in a gentleman's library or study, the piece brings period character to a home. The figure reclines gracefully with her arms raised behind her head, supported by a textured ground that merges into the dark rectangular plinth beneath.

Nineteenth-century French bronze sculptures are characterised by detailed anatomical proportions, cast metal construction, and dark patinated finishes applied through controlled chemical oxidation.

Traditional bronze sculptures were primarily cast using either the lost-wax (cire perdue) or sand-casting method, where molten copper alloy was poured into prepared moulds.

Authentic period bronzes typically feature incised artist signatures, foundry marks or stamps, natural surface wear, and hand-chased detail along seams and drapery.

A bronze sculpture serves as a structured focal point on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or console, contrasting with modern timber, marble, or glass surfaces.

Preserve bronze sculptures by dusting regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and applying microcrystalline wax sparingly to protect the patination from atmospheric humidity.
