Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century Georgian pedestal chest of drawers is fashioned from dark brown mahogany with a warm timber finish. The compact English country house piece is of narrow proportions, comprising a rectangular top positioned above four graduated drawers bordered by fine cockbeaded edges. Each drawer is fitted with a pair of brass swan-neck swing handles mounted on backplates, and the entire structure rests on traditional bracket feet. The wood surfaces show gentle natural variations in tone and minor surface wear consistent with age. The chest measures 89 cm high, 56 cm wide, and 43 cm deep, making it a versatile small-scale storage unit. In a modern home, this practical piece functions well as a bedside table in a bedroom, a compact filing cabinet in a study, or an accent chest in a narrow hallway to hold everyday accessories and small items.

FAQs

A pedestal chest of drawers is a compact, vertical storage piece typically featuring three to six drawers arranged vertically. Originally part of larger pedestal desks or designed as standalone side pieces in 18th and 19th-century interiors, they provided functional storage within a small footprint.

Authentic period chests are predominantly constructed from solid or veneered mahogany, featuring hand-cut dovetail drawer joints and solid wood drawer linings. Hardware often includes solid brass swan-neck or knob handles and traditional brass mortise locks.

Look for signs of age such as hand-sawn dovetails, irregular drawer linings, natural timber shrinkage, and original brassware with uneven oxidisation. Genuine period pieces also exhibit physical wear around the base, drawer runners, and keyholes.

Place the pedestal chest alongside a bed as a tall nightstand or use it in a home office to add warm timber tones. Balance dark wood finishes with contemporary lighting, neutral wall paint, and minimalist decorative ceramics on top.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the timbers lustre. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent veneer movement and fading.
