Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE GEORGIAN ERA:
Hand-sawn pine backboards with shrinkage gaps: original late Georgian assembly.
Reeded canted front pilasters: typical neoclassical design of the late 18th century.
Boxwood stringing and mahogany crossbanding to the frieze: fine period cabinet work.
Mellow surface wear and oxidation on timber edges: natural age and handling.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This 18th-century Georgian chest of drawers is constructed from mahogany, oak, and brass with boxwood inlay, finished in a dark brown colour. The facade incorporates two short drawers positioned above three long graduated drawers, fitted with brass swan-neck handles on roundel backplates and brass keyhole escutcheons. The top frieze features crossbanding and boxwood stringing lines, complemented by fluted pilasters on the canted front corners and ogee bracket feet at the base. The proportions measure 125.5 cm wide, 55 cm deep, and 119 cm high. Practical for everyday storage, this chest of drawers suits placement in a bedroom, hallway, or living room within a home. The timber exhibits a figured grain pattern across the drawer fronts and upper frieze sections. The construction maintains its structural integrity while displaying normal surface wear consistent with age and past use.

Georgian furniture from the 18th century is characterised by classical proportions, symmetry, and the extensive use of imported mahogany timber. Key design features often included bracket feet, fluted pilasters, fine string inlay, and brass hardware.

Craftsmen typically utilised solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over secondary timbers such as oak or pine for drawer linings. Drawers were constructed with hand-cut dovetail joints, cockbeaded edges, and fitted with cast brass swan-neck handles.

Authentic Georgian chests exhibit hand-saw marks on drawer bottoms, irregular hand-cut dovetails, period lock mechanisms, and natural oxidation on rear timber panels. Secondary timbers inside drawer cavities frequently show natural shrinkage or wear consistent with age.

Positioning dark mahogany furniture against light, textured walls creates visual balance within contemporary spaces. Complementing the chest with modern artwork, minimalist table lamps, or decorative ceramics highlights the grain without visually cluttering the room.

Regular dust removal with a soft microfibre cloth and periodic application of natural beeswax polish preserves the wood finish. Position the chest away from direct heat sources, radiators, or damp areas to prevent timber movement and veneer lifting.
