Antique Georgian Mahogany Chest of Drawers | Bow Front

18th century
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique 18th century Georgian bow front chest of drawers in mahogany, a beautifully shaped period piece with an elegant curved frontage and timeless character.

Standing on bracket feet, the chest has a well-balanced form that allows its graceful bow front to become a defining feature of the design.

Three large drawers provide useful storage and are finished with decorative brass handles, creating a lovely contrast against the rich tones of the mahogany.

The curved shape also shows off the timber beautifully, with gorgeous grain and colour giving the surface wonderful depth and natural variation.

Its classic proportions and understated elegance would make it equally suited to a bedroom, hallway or living space.

In good condition, well made and of good quality, this highly desirable Georgian chest is a lovely example of period furniture with beautiful mahogany and an especially appealing shape.

FAQs

A Georgian bow front chest of drawers is defined by its gently curved convex front facade, popularised in late 18th-century Britain. Constructed primarily from fine woods like mahogany, these chests typically feature clean classical lines, bracket feet, and brass pull handles.

Cabinetmakers during the Georgian era predominantly utilised solid mahogany and mahogany veneers imported from the West Indies. Secondary woods such as pine or oak were used for drawer linings, complemented by cast or stamped brass hardware for handles and escutcheons.

Authentic Georgian chests feature hand-dovetailed drawer joints, hand-sawn secondary timber, and age-appropriate wear to the underside and runners. The brass hardware should exhibit subtle surface irregularities and natural oxidisation consistent with late 18th or early 19th-century manufacturing.

A Georgian chest of drawers serves as a focal point in contemporary bedrooms, hallway entrances, or living spaces. Pairing the warm timber tones with neutral wall palettes, modern artwork, or minimal table lamps creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Maintain mahogany furniture by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a natural beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber warping, veneer lifting, or colour fading.
