Description

A very nice example of an early 18thc brass bowl, it has slightly tilting sides and wide rim, all early features....these bowls were for domestic use, which would explain why they are getting hard to find....this fine bowl would have been used in the bedroom for washing purposes and also used in the farmhouse / manor house kitchen. I like the early feature of the rolled copper rivet joining the ring to the bowl , so it can be hung up, when not in use....the bowl is in very good condition for its age and use.

English. C1710-20.

FAQs

Early 18th-century brassware encompasses utilitarian and decorative items crafted from copper-zinc alloys, commonly used in households for washing, serving, or display before the widespread standardisation of ceramics and mass production.

These items were typically cast, beaten, or raised from brass sheets using hand hammers, often featuring irregular surfaces, visible tool marks, and riveted or joined components characteristic of pre-industrial metallurgy.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate patination, hand-hammered textures, small casting flaws, and wear patterns consistent with age, alongside construction methods such as brazing and hand-finished edges.

Antique brass objects add warmth and historical contrast when placed on contemporary surfaces like rustic wood sideboards, marble countertops, or minimalist open shelving.

Preservation involves dusting with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding harsh chemical polishes that strip the historic patina; natural waxes can be applied sparingly if protection against oxidation is required.
