Description

Edwardian inlaid satinwood writing desk

This Edwardian inlaid satinwood writing desk was made circa 1900.

Satinwood was a timber that was used for the exclusive furniture in the Edwardian period.

The satinwood would be placed in the fine country and London homes of the very wealthy and so is made to a very high quality.

This lovely example of an Edwardian inlaid satinwood writing desk has fine inlay panels to the drawer fronts and stringing and banding on all sides.

The desk has a gilt tooled leather inset writing surface with a pair of drawers to the back with a fine brass gallery on top.

Under the top are a pair of mahogany lined drawers.

It stands on tapered legs with line inlay with the original castors.

Imagine the elegant home where this was first placed and the Edwardian lady or gentleman sitting at it as they wrote their letters to loved ones.

The Edwardian period is known as the age of elegance, items as beautiful as this are the reason why.

Edwardian furniture, produced during the reign of King Edward VII from 1901 to 1910, is characterised by lighter proportions, revival styles inspired by Sheraton and Hepplewhite, and delicate decorative inlays.

These pieces typically utilised fine timbers such as satinwood, mahogany, and rosewood, often enhanced with intricate marquetry or stringing, and assembled with traditional dovetail joints.

Authenticity is determined by examining secondary woods in drawer linings, hand-cut dovetailing, period-appropriate brass or wooden hardware, and the natural ageing and patination of the timber.

Pairing historical wooden furniture with contemporary seating and minimalist surrounding decor creates a balanced, eclectic aesthetic that highlights the craftsmanship of the piece.

Maintain satinwood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, dusting with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying a pure beeswax polish.
