This Chinese armorial porcelain plate dates from the 18th century, specifically the Qianlong period around 1780. Made from hard-paste porcelain with a glossy off-white glaze, overglaze enamels, and gilding, the plate has an octagonal scalloped rim outlined in gold. The decoration includes a central hand-painted heraldic coat of arms for Henley, Earl of Northington, surrounded by scattered floral sprays, butterflies, insects, and a green diaper border. Subtle signs of age appear as very slight wear and a glaze line on the underside base that does not run through to the front. The plate measures 23.4 cm high, 23.4 cm wide, and 3 cm deep. In a modern home, this decorative piece suits display on a sideboard top in a dining room or living space, reflecting an English Country House design aesthetic. The composition incorporates detailed animals supporting the central shield, including two lions and a stag, alongside a Latin motto ribbon reading Sola Et Unica Virtus. Hand-painted botanical motifs and butterflies adorn the wide rim and cavetto, adding variety to the surface pattern. The item maintains its original form without restoration.

Chinese armorial porcelain refers to custom-ordered hard-paste ceramics made in China during the 17th to 19th centuries, specifically hand-painted with European family heraldic coats of arms for noble and wealthy patrons.

These pieces were produced from kaolin clay in Chinese kilns such as Jingdezhen, painted with overglaze vitreous enamels, finished with gilded highlights, and transported via East India Company trading routes.

Authentic period examples display characteristic bluish-white or greenish glazed surfaces, slight surface irregularities, precise hand-painted heraldry matching historical peerage records, and age-appropriate wear to overglaze enamels and gilding.

Display armorial ceramics vertically on acrylic or brass stands upon sideboards, incorporate them into wall plate galleries in dining rooms, or arrange them inside glass-fronted china cabinets.

Clean gently by hand using lukewarm water and mild soap, avoiding chemical detergents, hot water, or abrasive cloths that can strip overglaze enamel paint and gilding.
