Description

A 19th Century Button Back Day Bed, Mahogany Turned Legs and Castors, 170cm.

A handsome 19th century, English chaise-daybed with a chesterfield button back, turned mahogany legs and period castors, upholstered within the last 5-10 years in a grey linen cotton, professional upholstery and stuffing preparation which allows a great base to reupholster if preferred.

A stylish design with no arms, splendid reclined back and 170cm length.

A splendid antique chaise daybed of both practical use and considerable decorative appeal, function and form that can enhance classic or contemporary space, an interior design piece.

The existing upholstery is in structurally excellent condition and may just need a wash on the edges where stored but otherwise negligible wear, the professional preparation for the recent upholstery was comprehensive, allowing removal and simple replacement of any new upholstery without the need for springs, webbing, stuffing etc.., ready to go.

The frame is structurally excellent, tight without wobbles or loose joints, 1 leg has a split which we shall have addressed in our workshop, all period castors are intact and operating, please note there are 3 ceramic and 1 brass.

Day beds and chaise longues gained immense popularity during the Victorian era, evolving from French Rococo designs to serve as functional yet elegant resting furniture for drawing rooms and boudoirs.

Authentic 19th-century day beds typically feature a robust hardwood frame, such as mahogany or walnut, supported by turned legs, brass castors, and traditionally stuffed upholstery with deep button tufting.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery, hand-turned wooden components, heavy brass castors, and traditional upholstery foundations like webbing and horsehair stuffing rather than modern foam.

An antique day bed serves as an eclectic statement piece in a modern room, pairing well with minimal walls, neutral textiles, and contrasting contemporary lighting to balance historical weight.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming with a soft brush attachment, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fabric fading, and consulting a professional conservator for traditional upholstery repairs.
