A cooking salamander is a traditional culinary tool featuring a heavy metal disc attached to a long handle, which was heated in an open fire and used to brown or caramelise the top of dishes before modern kitchen appliances.

These pieces were typically cast from brass or bronze, often featuring turned iron or brass handles, reflecting the skilled metalworking techniques of the 17th and 18th centuries.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate casting flaws, natural patination, hand-turned elements consistent with early lathe work, and wear patterns indicative of open-hearth use.

Such historic items can be displayed mounted on a wall, placed on a fireplace hearth, or styled on a rustic mantelpiece to add authentic historical texture to interior spaces.

Preserve the historical surface by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and avoiding harsh chemical cleaning agents or abrasive polishes that strip the accumulated patina.
