Satsuma ware is a type of Japanese pottery originating from Satsuma Province in Kagoshima Prefecture, traditionally characterised by an ivory-coloured, crackled glaze and elaborate polychrome and gilt enamel decoration. While its roots date back to the late 16th century, the pieces most commonly collected today stem from the Meiji period (18681912), when production expanded significantly for the Western export market.

Traditional Satsuma pieces are crafted from earthenware or fine ceramic bodies covered with a transparent, highly crackled glaze known as kannyu. The intricate designs are hand-painted using mineral-based enamel pigments, often heavily accented with raised gold leaf or moriage gilding to create rich, textured surface patterns.

Authentication involves examining the fineness of the hand-painted brushwork, the presence of genuine crackle in the glaze, and the weight of the ceramic body. Many authentic Meiji-era pieces feature artist or kiln signatures, often hand-painted on the base in gold or red enamel, though expert appraisal is recommended to distinguish period pieces from later reproductions.

Antique Satsuma plates bring global history and intricate craftsmanship to modern interiors and can be displayed using specialised plate stands on bookshelves, mounted securely on walls as art, or featured atop cabinets and sideboards as statement decorative accents.

To preserve antique ceramics, keep them out of direct sunlight to prevent fading of the delicate enamel colours and gold leaf. Clean only with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth, avoiding water immersion, harsh chemicals, or abrasive materials that could compromise the fragile glaze and crackle pattern.
