Description

This is an antique Japanese Satsuma plate made by Koshida factory from the Meiji period (1868-1912). The plate is decorated with a vibrant hand-painted design depicting a golden pheasant perched on a tree branch with red and gold flowers, with an arrangement of multi-colored flowers beneath it. The detailed craquelure glaze gives the plate a delicate, textured appearance, emphasizing its age and craftsmanship.

This plate exemplifies the craftsmanship and attention to detail characteristic of Meiji era Satsuma Koshida ceramics, produced mainly for export. The plate is signed with Koshida character mark and Shimazu cross signifying the patronage of the powerful Shimazu family, who historically ruled the Satsuma area. Koshida is a well-known and a prolific Satsuma pottery maker that has been producing ceramics since the Meiji era (1868-1912). These pieces are highly collectible and can be quite valuable, particularly those produced during the Meiji era, which are considered to be of the highest quality. Koshida factory was closed in 1927.The business seems to have reopened post war, either by a family member or by someone simply using a well-known name as a cachet. Satsuma ware is a type of Japanese pottery traditionally characterised by an ivory-coloured, crackled earthenware glaze adorned with elaborate polychrome enamels and gilt highlights, reaching its artistic zenith during the Meiji period.

These pieces are typically crafted from fine clay with a distinctive transparent crackle glaze, then meticulously hand-painted using mineral-based enamel colours and gold leaf accents.

Authentic items generally feature micro-crazing in the glaze, delicate hand-painted brushwork with raised enamel details, and artist or kiln seals painted on the base in iron red or gold.

This piece can be displayed on a dedicated plate stand within a bookcase, mounted on a wall as part of a curated gallery arrangement, or styled centrally on a sideboard to add historical texture.

To preserve the integrity of the glaze and gilding, keep the item away from direct sunlight, dust gently with a soft dry cloth, and avoid submerging in water or using chemical cleaning agents.
