This antique Persian Bidjar rug, originating from around 1890, is hand-woven from wool and cotton. The composition features a bright crimson red field dominated by a prominent blue and red central stepped diamond medallion, complemented by four yellow corner spandrels and a multi-banded dark brown border. Visible decorative details include the Herati fish pattern woven throughout, along with faded and corroded brown tones in the outer border framing and subtle fringe elements at both ends. Measuring 215 cm high, 124 cm wide, and 2 cm deep, this floor covering brings a rustic aesthetic to a gentleman's library, a study, or a traditional living room setting. The piece suits placement on hardwood flooring or beneath low-profile furniture in domestic interior spaces.

Bidjar rugs originate from the Kurdish town of Bidjar in northwestern Iran, renowned for their heavy, extremely dense weave and exceptional durability. They typically feature intricate central medallions, Herati patterns, and rich, vegetable-dyed colour palettes.

Traditional Bidjar carpets are hand-knotted using high-quality wool pile woven onto a durable cotton or wool foundation. Weavers compact the wet wool threads with heavy iron combs during knotting, creating a compact structure often referred to as the iron rug of Persia.

Authentic hand-knotted Persian rugs exhibit slight variations in pattern symmetry and colour shades, known as abrash, resulting from natural dye batches. On the reverse side, individual hand-tied knots are clearly visible and mirror the pile pattern precisely.

A red Persian rug provides a grounding focal point in contemporary or traditional spaces, offering textural contrast alongside sleek modern furniture. Pairing the rug with neutral upholstery, timber flooring, and muted wall tones allows the geometric motifs to remain prominent.

Regular gentle vacuuming without a rotating beater bar removes surface dust while protecting the wool fibres. Spills should be blotted immediately with an un-dyed cloth rather than rubbed, and periodic cleaning should be performed by a professional oriental rug restorer.
