FAQs

Cloisonne is an ancient metalworking technique where enamel paste is applied within compartments created by soldering wire onto a metal base. While earlier forms existed, the technique reached artistic heights during the Ming and Qing dynasties in China.

Authentic pieces are typically constructed with a base body of copper or brass. Thin metal wires, known as cloisons, are soldered to form the design cells, which are then filled with vitreous enamel before being fired and polished.

Authentic 19th-century pieces often display weightiness, slight irregularities in the hand-soldered wirework, pitting in the enamel surface, and natural oxidation on the exposed bronze or brass bases.

A large jardiniere can be utilised as an eye-catching focal point on a heavy console table, used to house large indoor foliage plants, or displayed empty as a sculptural art object.

Clean the surface gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, abrasive pads, and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or moisture to protect the delicate enamel and metalwork.
