Description

This intriguing rug was woven around 1910 in the Kirman Laver workshops of south-east Persia, considered to be among the very best in Persia up to the mid-20th century. It depicts scenes from the Life of Joseph. The lower scene captures the moment Joseph is removed from the well by his brothers, while the upper scene depicts the brothers selling Joseph to the merchants. It is beautifully drawn with vivid colours. The costumes and facial features are finely rendered. The border is decorated with repeating roundels featuring Joseph, his father Jacob, and Potiphar's wife Zollechah. Joseph is regarded as a symbol of righteousness and self restraint who resisted the advances of Zollechah and the temptations of Egypt. Finely knotted with merino wool, it has survived the generations in excellent condition.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Kirman-Laver rugs originate from the Kirman province in south-central Iran and are renowned for their exceptional knot density, fine wool, and detailed narrative designs often depicting historical or religious scenes.

These carpets are traditionally hand-knotted using fine Kurk wool or silk pile on cotton foundations, employing asymmetrical Persian knots to achieve high-definition pictorial detail.

Authenticity is determined by examining the irregularity of hand-spun natural dyes, the density and flexibility of the foundation, hand-whipped selvages, and age-appropriate wear patterns.

An ornate carpet acts as a significant focal point and can be balanced in a modern setting by pairing it with neutral walls, minimalist contemporary furniture, and adequate spatial breathing room.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, professional specialised cleaning, keeping the rug out of direct sunlight to prevent dye fading, and using a quality underlay.
