Daybeds and chaise longues gained immense popularity during the 19th century, evolving from earlier French neoclassical designs into comfortable, upholstered pieces intended for relaxation and formal drawing rooms.

These pieces typically feature solid mahogany or walnut frames, traditional hand-tied coil springs, horsehair or wool stuffing, and deep button-tufting upholstered in silk, damask, or velvet.

Authenticity is determined by inspecting the timber for age-related patina, examining hand-cut joinery, observing hand-forged or brass castors, and checking for traditional stuffing materials rather than modern synthetic foam.

A daybed serves as an architectural focal point in a living room, bedroom, or study; pair it with minimal modern art and neutral walls to let the rich upholstery and timber frame stand out.

Keep antique upholstered furniture out of direct sunlight to prevent fabric fading, gently vacuum velvet with a soft brush attachment, and treat the mahogany frame occasionally with specialist beeswax.
