This antique Yomut Turkmen asmalyk from circa 1880 is a pentagonal hand-knotted wool textile featuring a geometric serrated diamond lattice design in terracotta red, dark brown, and cream, enclosed within a patterned border. The piece retains its original long decorative multi-coloured wool tassels hanging from the lower edge, alongside a hanging loop at the top apex. The textile displays a soft palette of reds and blues, an ivory ground, original condition, very slight even wear, and a full pile. Measuring 68 cm high, 118 cm wide, and 1 cm deep excluding tassels, this piece functions as a decorative wall hanging in a living room, hallway, or study today.

An Asmalyk is a five-sided woven textile traditionally crafted by Turkmen nomadic tribes to decorate the flanks of a brides camel during wedding processions. These ceremonial trappings feature geometric lattice patterns symbolic of tribal identity and family heritage.

Turkmen textiles are hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun sheep wool on wool warps and wefts, coloured with natural vegetable and mineral dyes. The technique involves dense knotting to form durable pile panels finished with woven selvedges and decorative tassels.

Authentic 19th-century Yomut pieces feature a distinctive pentagonal shape, asymmetrical knotting structure, deep terracotta or dark red fields, and classic serrated diamond or lattice motifs bordered by geometric bands.

A pentagonal Turkmen Asmalyk can be mounted on a neutral wall as framed textile art or suspended using conservation-grade brass clamps. Its rich geometric patterning provides texture and historical contrast in modern, bohemian, or eclectically styled spaces.

Preserve antique wool textiles by displaying them away from direct sunlight, damp environments, and insect exposure. Vacuum gently without a rotating brush attachment, and consult a professional antique textile restorer for specialised cleaning or mounting.
