This small bronze model of a terrier from around 1900 exemplifies the animalier style. The piece presents a dark brown finish with a textured coat, a docked tail, and a square muzzle. The sculpture depicts the animal standing in profile on four legs with well detailed casting showing visible wear on the paws and muzzle. The metal exhibits natural tonal variations across the surface. The sculpture measures 10 cm high, 12 cm wide, and 5 cm deep. This compact decorative item fits easily onto a bookshelf or mantelpiece within a gentleman's library or study. The solid construction allows it to stand securely on any flat wooden surface without additional support. The traditional subject matter complements both period and contemporary interior settings.

FAQs

Originating predominantly in nineteenth-century France, animalier bronzes became popular across Europe as decorative depictions of domestic pets, livestock, and wildlife. Sculptors focused on capturing precise anatomical proportions and naturalistic poses designed for tabletop display.

Most figures were created using lost-wax or sand casting methods with molten copper alloy. Following casting, manual cold-chasing added surface textures such as fur detailing, followed by the application of a chemical patina.

Authentic period bronzes generally exhibit natural patination wear on raised areas where handled, crisp chased surface work, and distinct weight. Inspect the base and underside for casting seams, hand-finished screws, or foundry markings.

Small metal sculptures function effectively as accent objects on timber bookshelves, sideboards, or executive desks. Combining a patinated bronze figure with stone, paper, or leather elements creates a tactile contrast in contemporary study spaces.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry microfibre cloth or a soft brush to reach recessed details. Avoid liquid polishes, water, or abrasive cleaners, applying a thin coat of microcrystalline wax periodically to preserve the patina.
