Description

A fantastic antique Chippendale style mahogany leather top desk in the Chippendale style. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1890-1910 period.

It is very well made, sitting on beautiful cabriole legs with acanthus leaf carving at the knees, terminating in claw and ball feet. The top has a gadrooned edge and lovely inset tooled leather writing surface. There is lots of storage space in the five generous drawers, this has a nicely finished back so can be used as a free standing item.

We have just had this re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age, with just some minor old wear here and there beneath the polish.

The Chippendale style, originating from 18th-century cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale, is characterised by elaborate carving, cabriole legs, and ball-and-claw feet, blending Gothic, Rococo, and Chinese influences.

These desks are traditionally constructed from dense hardwoods like solid mahogany or walnut, frequently featuring hand-tooled leather inserts on the writing surface and cast brass hardware.

Authentication involves examining joinery techniques such as hand-cut dovetails, inspecting timber ageing, checking for makers marks, and noting traditional construction methods inconsistent with modern manufacturing.

This piece works effectively as a focal point in a study or home office, contrasting sharply against minimalist walls or paired with modern seating to create a balanced transitional aesthetic.

Maintain the timber by avoiding direct sunlight and excessive humidity, applying occasional microcrystalline wax, and treating the leather surface with specialised leather conditioners to prevent cracking.
