Delftware refers to tin-glazed earthenware made in the Netherlands, particularly in the city of Delft, starting in the 16th century, often inspired by imported Chinese porcelain.

These pieces are crafted from local clay, fired into an earthenware body, coated with an opaque white tin-glaze, and hand-painted with mineral pigments before a final transparent glaze firing.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit characteristic weight, hand-painted brushwork irregularities, crazing in the glaze, and minor rim chips or stilt marks on the underside consistent with period firing methods.

Antique plates add historic character when mounted on walls using secure plate hangers, displayed in glazed cabinets, or stood on mantelpieces alongside contemporary minimalist decor.

Antique earthenware should be kept away from direct sunlight, washed by hand very carefully using mild soap when necessary, and never submerged in water for extended periods due to porous biscuit bodies exposed at chips.
