Seventeenth-century English furniture is characterised by heavy rectilinear forms, solid timber construction, and geometric moulding details such as mitred panels and applied boss ornaments.

These pieces were constructed primarily using native British timbers such as oak for the primary frame and structural members, complemented by walnut, fruitwood, and occasionally cedar for decorative veneers and panelling.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-correct construction methods, including hand- cut dovetails, pegged mortise and tenon joints, hand-split oak secondary timbers, and appropriate wear patterns consistent with age and hand tools.

An antique chest of drawers can act as a grounding focal point in a contemporary setting by pairing its dark wood tones with minimalist surroundings, neutral walls, and contemporary lighting to create a balanced contrast.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying traditional beeswax to nourish the timber finish.
