Description

Magnificent! Fabulous rich madder-red with four vertical rows of four 'kilim guls' - more often found on the flatweave chuvals. This is therefore a rarer type than the flatweave chuvals and made by Yomut Turkmen around 1870-1880.

Chuvals or storage-bags were usually made in pairs and carried clothing and other personal belongings on the flanks of the camels during migrations. This chuval lost its flatwoven back a long time ago as well as the outer 'birds-heads' border on the sides only, where new selvedges have been added. Otherwise it is in excellent pile throughout.

This beautiful piece needs to be seen to appreciate the wonderful colour of madder-red which photos often don't do any justice to!

Size: 1.07m x 0.79m (3' 6" x 2' 7").

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A chuval is a large, rectangular face bag woven by the Yomut Turkmen nomadic tribes of Central Asia, traditionally used within a yurt for storing household goods and bedding.

Traditional pieces are constructed with hand-spun sheep wool for the pile, warp, and weft, utilising natural dyes derived from madder root for the characteristic red backgrounds, alongside indigo and plant-based yellows.

Authentic pieces feature dense, symmetrical knotting on wool foundations, natural colour variations known as abrage, and characteristic tribal gul motifs such as the tauk alem or diamond guls associated with specific clans.

These historical textiles are frequently mounted and displayed as wall art on linen backings or placed on low-traffic floors and benches to introduce rich textures and earthy red tones into a room.

Preservation requires regular, gentle vacuuming with a mesh screen cover, keeping the textile away from direct sunlight to prevent dye degradation, and ensuring professional specialist cleaning when necessary.
