This Victorian breakfront sideboard dates to 1860. The piece is constructed from warm brown walnut with glass panels in the two side doors, a central panel featuring floral marquetry inlay depicting an urn with flowers, and original brass ormolu mounts positioned on the pilasters and corners. Additional decorative elements include inlaid friezes across the top rails and a plinth base with a scalloped apron. Measuring 109 cm high, 180 cm wide, and 35 cm deep, the sideboard provides substantial surface area and storage space. Placed in a living room, dining room, or hallway today, this functional cabinet functions effectively as a display unit for decorative objects behind the glazed side doors while offering enclosed storage in the centre section. The traditional proportions and ornate marquetry details suit period and eclectic interiors, anchoring a room scheme with its distinctive nineteenth-century design.

A breakfront cabinet features a central section that projects forward beyond the flanking side sections. During the Victorian era, this design was frequently combined with decorative veneers, marquetry inlays, glazed side doors, and gilt-metal mounts.

These cabinets were constructed using solid native timber framing faced with figure-rich walnut or burr walnut veneers. Decorative features often incorporated contrasting marquetry woods, brass or bronze ormolu mounts, and clear glass panels.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut marquetry inlays flush with the surrounding veneer, period-correct brass hardware, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, and evidence of natural age and oxidation on the internal timber backboards and underside.

A Victorian credenza can serve as a focal anchor piece in a hallway, dining room, or living room. Modern styling often pairs the dark wood tones with minimalist contemporary art, neutral wall colours, and subtle ceramic accents.

Maintain walnut furniture by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight, central heating radiators, and damp environments to prevent veneer lifting.
