Description

A very unusual Victorian tin or toleware tea caddy in the form of a coal box. The caddy is a perfect little representation of a coal box, it is painted to mimic mahogany and decorated with flowers. The most remarkable thing about the piece is that it still retains the original caddy spoon secured on the back just like a coal shovel would be on a coal box. The whole is a most rare item in great condition just the odd minor blemish. C.1890.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A Victorian novelty tea caddy is a small, decorative container manufactured in the 19th century to store loose tea leaves, often shaped in playful or everyday household forms such as coal scuttles, furniture, or animals to appeal to Victorian tastes.

These pieces were typically constructed from sheet iron or tinplate, finished with hand-painted details, japanning, or lithographed transfers to simulate wood grains and decorative floral motifs.

Authentic pieces exhibit period manufacturing characteristics such as soldered seams, hand-applied decoration, authentic surface wear, and appropriate patination on the metal consistent with 19th-century production.

An antique tin caddy can be displayed on an open shelf, mantelpiece, or sideboard as a characterful accent piece that introduces historical texture and colour into traditional or eclectic interior schemes.

Antique tinware should be kept in a dry environment away from direct sunlight and moisture to prevent rust. Clean gently with a soft, dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes.
